Tastefully Celebrate the World Cup (or Life) with a Healthy Fruit Slushy

Having healthy go-to choices during festivities is a good thing; especially when the choices are super tasty. Keeping in the spirit of the World Cup, I created three deceptively delicious and delightfully nutritious fruit slushy concoctions. Even if you aren’t a soccer (futbol) fan, there’s something fun and healthy waiting to be taste tested by you.

Ever show up to a party where the food spread is mostly comprised of junk food? Is it just me or do you search for something tasty yet healthy? I’m all about you celebrating life and festivities like the World Cup with food that’s not gonna put junk in your trunk. Growing up, most of the festive gatherings I attended had few healthy choices. Let me level with you, even if there had been, I probably wouldn’t have appreciated it like I do now. Like many people it took having my own health issues to capture my attention.

Today is a different story. I choose to pass on junk food that leaves me with that not-so-energetic feeling the day after. You know what I mean? The food hangover created by carbs, processed foods and sugars. Instead I opt for tasty lusciousness found on the vine.

Friends, you can easily make these DIY tasty treats. I use this recipe in lieu of ice cream and don’t feel left out of the party. Fancy that!

Be your own hero or share a healthy fruit slushy and be someone else’s hero too. 🙂  Here’s to vibrant color and not fretting about flavor.

Dr. Paige Hunter enjoys her healthy fruit slushy!

I like recipes like this because (1) it’s simple and flexible, and (2) you don’t need to measure ingredients. I used a knife, a cutting board, and a fork for mashing up the fruit. Then, I used clear plastic cups to freeze the fruit and easily show off the slushy mush of goodness.

Ode to Old Glory

healthy fruit slushy for World cup celebrations

My first fruit slushy concoction is contains some good ol’ USA Patriotic symbolism donning the red, white & blue.

I chose to stick with two of my favorite berries, raspberry and blueberry. However, feel free to opt for strawberries or blackberries. Smash them up with a fork so to get that slushy yummy texture. In between the berries I opted for creamy coconut milk. Well, because who’d want to leave out Hawaii?

Viva El Tricolor!

Keep happy with a healthy fruit slushy

The second fruit slushy mixture is made up of Mexico’s colors of red, white and green to honor my husband’s birthplace, as well as our friends and family. It’s got an entirely different yet delicious taste from the first slushy.

Watermelon just seems to be the most appropriate color for red. It’s a Mexican favorite. Creamy white bananas easily play their part. Mainly, because most everyone loves bananas, right? Any thoughts to what fruit won green representation? Well, by popular Facebook demand, my friends seemed quite smitten with the adorable fuzzy kiwi fruit, and well, the lovable avocado. Between the two winners, I opted for kiwi. I find between the watermelon, bananas and kiwi, we’ve got ourselves a refreshingly fine slushy. I’ll add saucing it up with a squeeze of fresh lime juice for more Mexican flair! Delicioso!

Last but not least, if you aren’t feeling the Ode to Old Glory or Viva el Tricolor, I’ve got something extraordinarily exotic for you.

Ode to Brazil! Tropical Passion Slush

Brasil inspired healthy fruit slushy

To honor our friends from around the world who are currently enjoying Brazil, I’ve got the Tropical Passion Slush to make you blush. 😉

Remember, it’s easy! Just mash up these ingredients and put it in the freezer for about 30 minutes so you get the slushy love you deserve. This passion slush consist of pineapple, mango, watermelon & a little dragon fruit to boot. You can layer them or get creative. Do your thing and enjoy!

Thanks for coming by to watch by first video blog post or for reading this one. In the comment section, let me know what fruit slushy you found most appealing and why, or just share with me what World Cup team you may be rooting for! Get out there, be happy, stay healthy and enjoy the fun junk food alternatives!

How to Lower Stress & Maintain Sanity

I have a challenge for you.

I want you think about all the places you can sit and do nothing. That’s right; do nothing, and just enjoy peace and quiet. Yes, I am “double-dog” daring you. Please, don’t get caught up in the position of doing nothing. You can sit or be lying down, kneeling, etc.. The point is you are doing nothing; you’re just being.

Where are you? Are you “chillaxing” in the grass?

Are you soaking in the bathtub?

Perhaps you visualize yourself curled up on a nice big sofa?

Go ahead! Make your list. It’ll be good for your mental health. Pinky promise! Come up with a list of at least five different restorative happy places. If you make it to ten and beyond, you’ll receive extra credit!

How to Lower Stress and Maintain Sanity

Here’s the purpose behind my prodding.

 Do nothing.

Let’s bring back the art of being still, shall we? Honor yourself and those around you by taking a small sabbatical. Soak up some silence; be still with God. Soak up silence in sunshine, in a dark room, in water. Simply soak up some sanity!

Treat this challenge much like the “emergency preparedness plans” we know schools generate to lower stress levels and control challenging circumstances as much as possible. Before the storms come (and they will), we need to prepare ourselves. Let’s pretend you have kids who keep you on your toes. How do you refuel? You wish you had hours but that’s not the current reality. Sometimes five minutes of breathing and soaking up one of these pre-planned special “time out” places can rejuvenate you or prevent a straight jacket. 😉

One of the greatest gifts we can give our self is a daily dosage of silence.

Indeed, it is golden. Sadly, silence isn’t appreciated, as it should be.

We can hardly leave our homes and find a restaurant without televisions mounted to walls blaring out bad news or adrenal pumping, action-packed entertainment. We can’t make a quiet trip to the Supermarket. Instead we are getting conditioned by upbeat music spurring us to buy more. The noise is everywhere.

We are suffering from overstimulation. What we need is a break from the noise pollution. Our minds and bodies need to enjoy the silence and regain our centeredness. We need to hear ourselves feel emotions and think and process about life.

It’s time to breathe deeply. We need to soak and be still.

To be reminded that life is fleeting, yet, at the same time, it’s can also be very long. We need to pace ourselves. It’s time to check in, lower our stress levels and embrace a little kindness through the silent humming airwaves of warmth.

It’s my deep desire that you would love yourself and others enough to identify your very own five or more quiet places of refuge. Places you know you can quickly retreat when life seems a bit awry or you need to recalibrate so you can stay in the game by being still in silence. I want to hear from you! Please tell me some of your favorite places are in the comments below.

Here’s to a little more sanity and less stress!

Be cool: just add mint & lime

(It’s a yummy cucumber detox drink too!)

This past weekend, I was on a mission to find that one thing that will have me feeling as cool as cucumber. Knowing that things are heating up for many of us, I wanted to provide some advice for staying cool and I’m not just talking about a stylin’ pair of sunglasses and hip flip flops, I’m talking about something that serves as a refreshing pick-me-up.

What I’m referring to is an adventure for the taste buds! I’m all for sprucing things up with interesting colors or textures.

Like a stealthy sniper, I’m always on the lookout for delicious alternatives to sugary sodas and pricey iced coffees. Yet, I am still looking for something that delivers, not only on tastiness, but also health benefits. This past weekend in Guadalajara I discovered it! Eureka! Another alternative that made me smile.

And although it’s been many years since I’ve said Adios to the Big Gulp and multiple shots of java, I haven’t forgotten! I remember how important it was to find replacements. So if you’re in the place where you’ve decided to say goodbye to unnecessary sugar this simple recipe is for you. Or perhaps you’ve been called a health nut for a while, please, keep reading. I think you may want to add this cucumber detox drink recipe to your favorite Spring/Summer elixirs.

Feel free to include a little umbrella or curly straw for flare. Or keep it simple. Whatever floats your boat. I’m one of those “kitchen vixens” that likes to give others plenty of liberty when it comes to how much mint or lime is truly enough. So here’s the outline but feel free to tweak it to your liking! And yes, choosing organic is best!

Minty Cucumber Limeade

Cool cucumber lime detox drink from Paige Hunter PhD

Ingredients (Serves 4-6):

2 medium to freshly squeezed limes or 5-6 key limes
1 medium peeled cucumber
10 or more mint leaves (I think you’ll like a lot)
6-8 cups of cold water
Optional: 1 heaping tbsp of local raw honey
 or agave

Simply mix all these goodies in your favorite blender and Voila! You’re ready to kick up your heels and enjoy!

While your sipping and relaxing, let me remind you that each ingredient is so helpful for detoxifying the body. So if detox was on the brain, then Minty Cucumber Limeade serves up a brilliant choice.

I’m a particularly big fan of the following benefits for cucumbers and mint.
Here’s my top two favorites, but know there are many more!

Cucumber:

Helps with Hydration & Digestion

Cucumbers are made up of over 95% of water. As such the water helps keep you hydrate in a magnificent way! Additionally, it’s high dietary fiber helps flush toxins from the digestive tract allowing the body’s system to do its thing with more ease.

Mint:

It has Anti-bacterial & Anti-inflammatory properties and it’s tasty!

This powerful little herb is multipurpose! It fights against bad breath and unwanted gas. This palate pleaser is also a tummy tamer. It helps aid indigestion and inflammation. And what I love about it most is that it gets the digestive enzymes firing up creating an overall happier body. When digestion is made easier our entire body conserves more energy for far more important things like skipping and playing hop-scotch.

FYI, I choose to drink the Minty Cucumber Limeade concoction without honey or agave. However, the handsome fellow I married has more of a sweet tooth. Either way, drink what tastes best to you. You are still making a great decision for your health! Let freedom ring! For more kicks you can substitute limes for lemons.

Leave me a comment and make it fun will ya? I want to know if you will give this cooling concoction a try or do you already have a favorite?

Cheers to your health and happiness!

Strange Brew: The Curiously Healthy Exilir Called Kombucha

Anytime I’m checking out at the grocery store, without fail the sales clerk or someone in line asks me, “What’s that?” I’m always surprised that so few know about it. Then I remind myself that I’ve only been in-the-know for about four years. “It’s Kombucha”.

Kombucha Tea on store shelf

Then the flurry of questions continue. “What’s it taste like? What is it? Is it expensive? Why do you drink it? Is it like beer? It seems strange.”

Then I go into my best sales pitch even though I’m not a brand ambassador for the Kombucha company. I just know it’s benefits are so incredible and I can’t help myself. My usual schpeel goes something like this.

It’s Kombucha. It’s a health drink. It comes in a variety of flavors. Don’t shake it up! It’s fermented like a beer or soda. It’s fantastic for you because it‘s raw living food that’s chock full of probiotics and enzymes. Probiotics are good bacteria that help to keep your gut flora balanced. Enzymes help break down, digest and better absorb our foods. I love the taste of it, my favorite’s the ginger. It may seem expensive but the alternative to bad health is far more expensive. I drink it because I know 80% of my immune system is located in the gut and I feel more energetic and balanced when I drink it. You can save more money if you brew your own. Currently I’m not brewing because I’m a bit of gypsy living between here and Mexico. Please, give Kombucha a whirl! Your body will thank you. AND, exit.

These are the friendly encounters I’ve had at my local grocery store. I realize the culture we currently live in has become so much about the mainstream offerings of soda pops and sugary coffee drinks that are devoid of nutrition and laced with chemicals. I am here to be like a beacon in the night guiding all who will listen to give this “Strange Brew” a chance!

Please share with me. Let me know if you’ve tried Kombucha. If so, did you have a favorite? If you haven’t, will you this “Strange Brew” a chance? Leave me a comment.

Cheers and bottoms up!

To your health!

Kick a cold to the curb or boost your immune system!

How you kick a cold to the curb or boost your immune system!

There’s a common belief held by many that choosing health is as challenging as swallowing cod liver oil. I’m here to set things straight. While cod liver may be healthy but it’s down right nasty. I’d rather you skip the nasty, and go for healthy and happy. I’m here to help you take a simple yet profound action. It can help kick colds to the curb and boost your immune system.

So here’s a little recipe I use to feel happy as a lark and healthy as a horse. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I have.

Lemon Ginger Honey Love Tea

Kick a cold to the curb or boost your immune system

Yes, you read the title correctly. It’s that good that love in included in it’s title.

Ingredients (Serves two):

1 medium to large freshly squeezed lemon
1 heaping tablespoon of local raw honey
1 nub of fresh ginger to taste (or more and try using a garlic press)

Here are a few words to describe how I feel when consuming this tea:

Loved, Happy, Vibrant

Passionate for life, Spicy, Alive

It may seem a bit silly to describe how I feel, but if marketers can create emotions surrounding wines with chocolate cherry full-bodied flavors, then I purport we can FEEL amazing while sipping Lemon Ginger Honey “Love Tea”.

So if you’ve been sniffling and snotting, get aggressive and go for some Love Tea! Wanting to feel as strong as an ox? Or perhaps beef up your immune system? Consider the Love Tea!

Here’s a few benefits of each ingredient. Once you read it, you’ll understand why the Love Tea packs such a powerful punch!

Lemons

  1. Obviously lemons offer up vitamin C and that’s a good thing. They’re also rich in flavonoids and work like tag team wrestlers kicking colds and the icky flu to the curb.
  2. Lemons help the body become more alkaline by balancing out the body’s pH level. Now this may seem weird but think about it. Cancers thrive in an acidic state. And this my friends, is why I’m pro lemon! Lemons have over 20 anti-cancer properties. So why not include some ounces of prevention, hey?
  3. Lemons are cleansing. And I’m here to set up to have you mischievously enjoyable time at your next annual doctor’s visit. You realize doctors are challenged by their patients’ continual commentary, like “Dr. Oz said this” or “Dr. Oz suggested that”. Well, give them something new and fresh. When Doc asks, “how are your bowel movements”? And, you know it will! You preparedly answer, “well, according to Dr. Paige’s prescription for love tea, I’m finding that the lemons are raising the peristalsis in the bowels, thus making me a “regular” kind of gal/guy”. Have fun with it and do me a favor. Come back with report so we can giggle about it, okay?

Ginger

  1. This root herb is spicy! And that’s beneficial right? In her book, Healing Spices, Dr. Bharat Aggarwal explains that ginger is effective in addressing all types of nausea from motion sickness to morning sickness. She also shares that ginger helps with post-surgery nausea and nausea that results from chemotherapy. To me, it just taste good, and that’s why I vote ginger a winner!
  2. And did you know ginger is known to reduce inflammation and aid with digestion? And, yes! Please take note if you have an upcoming hot date. Psst! It reduces flatulence. Of course, you don’t need this information for yourself, it’s for your date. 😉

Ginger

Honey

  1. Okay, Pooh Bear, do your best to get raw local honey. Now why is honey so spectacular? Because it contains antioxidants, anti-bacterial properties as well as enzymes; all which support a happier digestive and immune system. And who knew something so sweet could be so helpful?
  2. Honey is a hero. Sometimes it’s referred to as a natural antibiotic because it can kill certain infection causing bacteria. It’s serves as a trusty ally to health warriors battling unfriendly symptoms caused by colds, flus, or a compromised immune system.
  3. Want more energy? Honey is great because it serves up natural sugar and it’s carbs give us strength. Here’s a special “007” secret of honey. Its glucose is absorbed quickly in our body’s giving an immediate boost of energy or a Hap-bee buzz. (oh why resist?) Then, its fructose is slowly absorbed for sustained energy. This friends, is why I go for honey in the morning before a workout. If you want a pick me up and sustained giddy up, you’ll enjoy it’s benefits too.
